A school trying to dissociate itself from one of the country’s most well-known psychiatric secure hospitals has started the new term under a new name.

The former Broadmoor Primary has become Wildmoor Heath School, named after a nearby nature reserve.

At the school’s official naming day, attended by Bob Wade, councillor and Bracknell Forest mayor, children sang the Wildmoor Heath song and talked about the new name. The infants made an autumn collage of leaves, nuts and berries collected on a walk on Wildmoor Heath.

Andrew MacKay, MP for Bracknell, attended an afternoon tea party to mark the event.

The 200-pupil school changed its name after governors thought it might be putting parents off applying. It is next to the high-security hospital that is home to criminals such as the Yorkshire Ripper, Peter Sutcliffe.

After the decision to rebrand was announced, children had the chance to vote on three names: Wildmoor Heath, Crowthorne Forest or Addiscombe.

The school’s most recent Ofsted report was in 2007, when it was rated “satisfactory”. HW.
