We await with interest the response of the growing band of educational consultants to claims by David Eastwood, senior teaching fellow at Aberdeen University, about peddling “silly theories and fads”.
Eastwood lived up to his reputation as a maverick, or to use the pukka academic term, “a blue skies thinker”, when he spoke to north-east heidies recently. Describing right brainleft brain theories as “rubbish”, he quoted the comment of a specialist on the workings of the brain when asked if we have learnt more in recent years.
“Yes,” came the reply. “But nothing that would help you as a teacher.”
Ever controversial, Eastwood drew surprisingly little response from his audience when he described secondary education as “nothing more than a comment on primary education”.
Now there’s a subject for a national debate.
