Number crunching

Age 11-15

Put brackets in this statement to make it true.

3 + 4 - 5 - 3 - 1 - 5 = 12 Find three different ways to do it.

Now make this statement true by inserting suitable brackets and choosing values for a and b from the three numbers 3, 4 and 5.

a + b x a + b + a x b = 122

Brainteaser solutions from page 30

Police patrol

There are 3 different routes from A to B, and 4 different routes from A to C

There are 9 different routes from D to E.

Number crunching

3 + (4 - 5)(-3 - 1 - 5) = 12

3 + 4 - 5 - (3 - 1)(-5) = 12

3 + 4 - (5 - 3 - 1)(-5) = 12

a + (b x (a + b + a) x b) = 122, when a = 5, b = 3
