Our disclosure last week that Douglas Osler, the head of the Inspectorate, wants the primary 1 weans to have a full day from day one might have caused consternation in some places.

But South Lanarkshire, ever ready to tear up established ways of doing things, is one authority that has no intention of standing still. It had already decided that the primary 1s should have a normal day from September 7.

How this is going down in the Duffin household is anybody’s guess. Jim is a senior member of the council’s education department which imposed the change, while wife Sandra is head of St John’s primary in Hamilton.

Her views are not known but, if they are in any way akin to those of other heads in the area, breakfast meetings chez Duffin will be even more interesting than Frank Pignatelli’s.
