Bribery is a poor way forward

Vanessa Ray’s “Send in the Cavalry” (TES, March 25) makes me despair of the education system and the values that we are prizing. She raised pound;10,000 to pay pound;200 to students who passed five or more A*-C GCSEs, saying: “They just needed a good enough excuse to behave and pound;200 was it.”

What happened to education for its own sake? Presumably her next year’s GCSE students will want the same sum or more. Did her governors and staff condone this?

Surely this money would have been better spent on improving the learning environment, staffing smaller classes, or intense coaching sessions rather than this bribery?
