Bridging the mathematics gap

A new initiative that aims to stop 11-year-olds from forgetting mathematical concepts over the summer holidays has been set up by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.

The voluntary scheme involves primary teachers concentrating, during the last two weeks of term, on the areas that Year 6 pupils find most difficult. The pupils' new secondary schools will then finsh teaching the rest of the units during the first fortnight of the autumn term. The QCA hopes the voluntary scheme will help address ministers' concerns that pupils lose momentum in key stage 3.

The two bridging unit packs, Linking Fractions and Percentages and Algebra: Introducing Symbols are available from the QCA at pound;9 each to schools. Call 01787 884444.
