* The new Concise Oxford Dictionary and Thesaurus on CD-i from OUP and Philips Media comes with some awesome figures. It includes over 120,000 entries, 190,000 definitions and audio pronunciation of 46,000 words.

If you want to search for the word music, you enter the letter M and the program will display words beginning with that letter. All words in a description are cross-referenced so that users can explore related definitions if they wish.

Also included is a word game, Fact and Fiction, which can be played by up to four players. Three levels of skill make it suitable for all ages.

The CD-i costs Pounds 34.99 and will be available from June 23 in major bookshops.

* Since autumn l993, 300 schools and colleges have taken up an offer from LDV Ltd to give free advanced driving instruction with Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents trainers to up to three teachers from every school that buys one of its new minibuses. The half-day course goes into legal responsibilities, how to check vehicles’ road worthiness and a short assessment of driving.

RoSPA says that the course offers “familiarisation” rather than training. For those seeking training, RoSPA recommends its full-day defensive driving course (Pounds 250 for three people).
