Patrick Swan, 16, of Berwickshire High, made history over the festive period when he became the youngest winner of the 136-year-old New Year professional sprint at Musselburgh racecourse. He won the 110m handicap sprint - racing off a start of 9m - in 11.68 seconds and received a prize of pound;4,000.

Nick Smith, a former pupil at Stewart’s Melville College, was the previous youngest winner at 18. He won the title four years ago.
