ISRAEL: A committee has been set up by Israel’s education minister Zvulun Hammer after teenage girls claimed to be members of a fan club of Yitzhak Rabin’s killer, Yigael Amir.

The three 17-year-old girls from a state-religious school in the southern settlement town of Kiryiat Gat say they represent a much larger phenomenon of Amir “groupies”. They attended his court hearing, send him love letters and fill their scrap books with his pictures.

Mr Hammer says he hopes it is simply a case of “schoolgirl silliness”. The committee will investigate allegations that some teachers have been encouraging girls to write to their “national hero”.
