LSIS council election
Nominations for the governing council of the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, one of further education’s most influential bodies, are still open. The service was launched a year ago with an inaugural council of 30 members selected by the Single Voice, a company that represents FE in strategic dialogue with government on regulatory matters. Each constituent group will elect candidates before putting forward a final selection for appointment by LSIS. Nominations close on June 8, with nominees posted on the LSIS website on June 11. Voting will close on July 2. The new council will be announced on July 6.

Debate over 14-19
The upheavals facing 14-19 education and issues relating to the transfer of funding to local authorities will be examined at the Learning and Skills Network’s Big Debate in London next week. The speakers are John Freeman, director of the React Programme overseeing the 16-19 changes, Paul Head, principal of the College of North East London, and Julian Gravatt, director of funding and development for the Association of Colleges. The event will be sponsored by the Northwest Regional Development Agency on behalf of England’s regional development agencies.

New network leader
John Lawton has been appointed as chief executive of the Open College Network Yorkshire and Humber. It is one of nine English regional divisions of the National Open College Network, an awarding body for credit-based courses and qualifications. Mr Lawton takes over from Sarah Connell, who is retiring.
Route to work
Lord Tebbit, the former Conservative minister, famously told people to get on their bikes to look for work, but art and design graduates at Stockport College have gone one better by hiring their own double-decker bus. The graduates have created a travelling exhibition of their work in an old Routemaster. The bus will pick up design professionals from their offices, giving the graduates a chance to showcase their work and make contacts with potential employers. The graduates’ final show is being held at Stockport College on June 8-12.
