Gender pay gap
The Government’s “lack of action” in breaking down stereotypes in schools is partly to blame for the gender pay gap, according to an official report. Progress in narrowing wage differences is “stalling” and ministers should do more to change the culture in the education system to encourage girls to opt for non-traditional jobs, says the Women and Work Commission. It wants the Department for Children, Schools and Families to produce a national strategy to tackle gender inequality, particularly among children aged up to 14, by next March.
Family wins case
The family of teacher who was killed while cycling home from work has received Pounds 580,000 in compensation. David Kerslake, who was head of science at Sharples School, Bolton, was 44 when he was knocked off his bike in the city in October 2004. He was hit by a car driven by a diabetic who suffered a hypoglycaemic attack and lost control. Mr Kerslake, from Radcliffe, Manchester, left a wife, Jacqueline, a nurse, and daughter, Lydia, now eight. The union Unison helped Mrs Kerslake with her claim. The teacher had been applying to become a deputy head.
Extra FE places
There will be 34,000 extra places in sixth forms and colleges in September, Ed Balls has said. The Schools Secretary has revealed how he will spend the Pounds 655 million of extra cash announced in the Budget to prevent a crisis in further education. More than 1.5 million young people will have places in education and training in September, and there will be more than 25,000 extra apprenticeships this year.
Stockport goes global
Enterprising children are hoping teachers will share their best lessons on a new website. Pupils at Werneth School in Stockport were inspired to run the project, on global issues after RE lessons on fair trade. The site will have lesson plans, PowerPoints, resources for students and teachers, a blog and a rating scheme on the lessons.
