`Food for thought’ plan

Some 1,800 P6 pupils in Scotland will take part in specially created “food and farming” education days this year, thanks to an expanded grant scheme announced by Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead. He also revealed that 12 schools would receive funding to help them host special Farmers’ Market events, building on the success of a scheme launched last year. Mr Lochhead pledged that, within five years, all pupils would get the opportunity to learn about food and agriculture. The Scottish Government’s national food and drink policy, Recipe for Success, recognises that some young people do not understand how their food is produced, how it is cooked, and how the choices they make about food affect their health and impact on the environment.

Human rights project

Children from 12 primary schools in the CowdenbeathLochgelly area of Fife will visit the Scottish Parliament next week to exhibit a project they have been doing on human rights. The 21 P7 youngsters have been exploring the theme “Who We Are”, creating 3-D models with the support of Cuban artist Lyver Chavez. In accompanying booklets, the children ask the adults in their lives to support them to realise their ambitions. Fife MSP Helen Eadie MSP has invited the children to show their work at Holyrood from February 22-24. The project is part of the activities of the Children’s Parliament, a charity which attempts to develop opportunities for children to become active citizens.
