President Clinton wants American students to wear school uniforms so that they “stop killing each other over designer jackets”.

In a speech in Long Beach, California, the first US district to insist on uniform for 14s and over, he welcomed the new policy, credited with reducing the amount of crime in the schools by 36 per cent and the number of fights between students by more than half.

“They’re not bringing weapons as much, they’re not being absent as much because they’re not confronted on the way to school by somebody asking them what gang they belong to because of the clothes they have on,” said city spokesman Dick Van Der Laan.
