INDIA: Safety legislation regulating school transport is to be hurried through Parliament, following the death of 27 pupils whose bus plunged into a river after being involved in a race with another bus, writes Suchitra Behal.
An inquiry into the incident found that the driver had a previous record of reckless driving and the bus was carrying at least 100 children more than its licensed capacity. It is the third accident of its kind in two months.
Schools in Delhi had been ordered to paint all their buses bright yellow, with their telephone number and address on the side, but only a few responded.
The Delhi Transport Undertaking has been told to take over the transport of children in government-aided schools, and private bus operators have been asked to send their drivers for training.
