* The pervading “pong” in schools mentioned in “Smell you later” (TES, April 21) reminded me of a 60s story by Peter Malone, a Liverpool teacher.

He sent a letter home to parents about the body hygiene of their offspring and received this irate reply: “We send our child to school to be learned, not smelt”.
