* Those of us concerned to abolish national tests at seven and eleven have been out-manoeuvred by the Department for Education and Skills. We abandoned our campaign to scrap tests after a partial victory at key stage 1, with tests complementing but not determining levels awarded.

We now have to fight to get tests for seven-year-olds removed entirely and a similar outcome for eleven-year-olds without another fudge that would leave the “Sats mindset” (TES, November 25) undisturbed. We may have been out-manoeuvred in the short-term but the battle can still be won.
