ED EXCEL CERTIFICATE OF ACHIEVEMENT IN MATHEMATICS. By Sue Bright, Dan Birkett and Keith Pledger. Heinemann pound;11.50.

The EdExcel Certificate of Achievement in Mathematics is designed to reward students who have difficulty in progressing beyond level 3 of the national curriculum. Divided into three parts, the book is tailored to this certificate but it could be used with any similar course or as a supplement to other schemes. The content is clearly laid out on full colour pages. The explanations are good, but some of the exercises are too short. An activities and assessment pack provides more material to support teaching the course.

Ian Wilson is head of Woodcote High School, Croydon, south London
