FOUNDATION MATHEMATICS FOR GCSE. By Brian Speed, Kevin Evans and Keith Gordon. Collins. pound;12.50.

Clear layout and logical coverage characterise this foundation tier textbook. Each chapter starts with a statement of aims and concludes with a summary. Activities related to the topics provide opportunities to practise skills, and puzzle pages are welcome reminders that maths can be fun. Investigations are within the capability of students working at this level, but can be extended by brighter students. Exam questions are included in exercises at the end of the book.

Ian Wilson is head of Woodcote High School, Croydon, south London
