UPGRADE A-LEVEL PHYSICS. By Jim Breithaupt. Stanley Thornes. pound;9.99.

This book is presented as a supplementary workbook for A-level. It is concise and well-organised, dealing with some of the more difficult parts of the core syllabus.

There are 21 chapters in four sections: advanced mechanics; more about materials and thermal physics; fields and circuits; and waves and particles. Each short chapter starts with a recap of what should already be known followed by a summary of further content. This is developed in case studies which often end with an interesting application to be solved. There are also worked examples and numerous exam questions, to which numerical answers are given.

The book supplements the author’s main A-level text, but provides an effective stand-alone resource, especially for more able students who could use it independently.
