A bright future for the past

WE were disturbed to read the headline “A bleak future for history”. Apart from some statistics in the second paragraph, the bulk of the article was on the plunge in popularity of geography.

In our school, despite a greater number of option choices vying for places, the take-up of history at GCSE (84 from a cohort of 180), has reached its highest level and we have had to increase the number of teaching groups.

Headlines like “A bleak future for history” do nothing to encourage students to continue in the subject and are not, in our experience, representative of the situation.
