Bristol does Eton head a favour

Blood-curdling screams of panic from heads of private schools have been filling the national media of late. The cause of their alarm, in case you missed it, has been moves by elite universities, led by Bristol, to admit more children from poor backgrounds.

The resulting brouhaha in the national press has brought us tales of “star” private pupils failing to get into Bristol and chunterings from public-school stalwarts such as Tony Little, head of Eton. He spoke of “boys suspecting that the (Bristol) admissions procedure is perfunctory”.

Reassuring then, to hear that Bristol has not yet been completely overrun by the great unwashed. A little bird tells us that at least one public-school girl has been lucky enough to get an offer from the university. Her proud father? One Tony Little, the head of Eton.
