* Bristol University should “obviously” favour candidates from comprehensive schools over equally well-qualified privately-educated candidates, one of its lecturers told The TES this week.

The lecturer, who did not wish to be named, said he and colleagues had been “appalled” by criticism of the university’s approach to admissions.

“If you are reading a pile of UCAS forms and have two pupils with four As and a raft of A*s at GCSE, you are obviously going to pick the one who went to a comprehensive instead of the one who went to Eton.”
