In response to this February’s appeal in The TES, 1,300 British teachers volunteered to work in African schools through the charity Link Community Development. Over the next three years, 180 of them will spend five weeks working with local teachers in South Africa, Uganda or Ghana under a scheme funded by the Millennium Commission. On their return, they will work with four British schools each to raise awareness about lfe in Africa. Eighty-eight British schools are now twinned with schools in Africa, each donating pound;250 a year for four years towards the African school’s development, exchanging photographs and letters and doing global citizenship work.

For details on twinning contact Link Community Development, Unit 39, Kings Exchange Business Village Tileyard Road, London, N7 9AH. Tel: 020 7691 1818, Fax: 020 7209 4167
