A meeting of the International Confederation of Principals, an organisation devoted to the worldwide brotherhood of headteachers, ended in discord last week when its gala dinner became an international karaoke contest. After delegates at the meeting in Cologne were entertained by a German barbershop choir they began competing in their own singing contest. The South Africans kicked off the show, followed by a German group who sang about how school taught them nothing. As some Australians prepared to perform “Waltzing Matilda”, a posse of mischievous New Zealanders gave a rousing rendition of their Antipodean rivals’ anthem.
