Architecture Week (June 18-27) has inspired an excellent set of downloadable activities to help children at key stages 1 to 3 understand the built environment. The basic principle is that buildings are not just made by architects, but by the people who use them.

Some activities involve investigation - identifying what makes a street or describing unfamiliar features of familiar locations, such as classrooms.

Others feature practical skills, such as using modular units made from rolled newspaper to assemble geodesic structures. Photos and background information are very well organised, bringing history, design and the imagination into fruitful partnership.
