WIN A FRAGMENT OF MARTIAN METEORITE

Leicester University scientists are offering a chunk of the Red Planet to the person coming up with the most amusing caption for the image at www.src.le.ac.ukprojectsbeagle2

With Mars being closer to Earth than it has been for 60,000 years, the European Space Agency has seized the chance to search for evidence of life on the planet by sending up the probe Beagle2, which is due to land on Christmas Day. Beagle 2 operations are being conducted by the Lander Operations Planning Centre at the Open University, in collaboration with scientists at Leicester University and engineers at Leicester’s National Space Centre (NSC).

The competition aims to raise awareness of this pioneering space project.

The first prize also includes a family ticket to the NSC. Closing date: midnight, December 24. www.beagle2.com

FREE CITIZENSHIP TEACHING RESOURCE

The British Red Cross has introduced a new area to its website, covering Red Cross work in the UK and overseas, with topics such as Guantanamo Bay, weapons of war, first aid with a difference, and games that kill. The “games that kill” section focuses on typical scenarios in Iraq, ie children playing football in the streets of Basra surrounded by weapons left behind by soldiers. These include grenades, ammunition and even armoured fighting vehicles.

The site shows how many children in war zones are hurt by mines and what the experts call UXO (unexploded ordnance).
