Hans Christian Andersen Until October 2 Explore “the dark side” and the innocence of Andersen’s vision and create your own fairy tales at this free exhibition at London’s British Library, marking the 200th anniversary of the author’s birth. Historical material is supported by interactive exhibits such as the puppets, pulleys, projections and paper-cuts within a soundscape, which bring Andersen’s characters to life. Related events include a musical version of The Little Match Girl narrated by actress Paula Wilcox, June 27, 6.30-7.40pm, and a discussion between authors Julia Eccleshare and Francis Spufford, chaired by Penelope Lively, June 28, 6.30-8pm. Tickets: pound;4-6. There are free gallery performances for children aged four to eight, July 11-22 (school groups), July 24-August 19 (families).

Literature festival July 8-18

Among the many writers taking part in the annual Ways With Words festival at Dartington Hall, Devon, are Julian Barnes, Hilary Mantel, David Lodge and Louis de Berni res. York Balloon Debate July 19

Five environmentalists will argue the case for their chosen species - an invertebrate, a bird, a fish, a mammal and a plant - and the audience will vote on which species should receive a (fictitious) pound;10,000,000 cheque towards its conservation.
