More than 1,400 events will be held nationwide to promote an awareness of black history and experience, positive black contributions to British society and black people’s pride in their cultural heritage. It coincides with the end of Africa 05, a celebration of African visual arts, cinema, literature, history, music, craft and performing arts. For example, until October 31, the Horniman Museum in London is exhibiting West African textiles and the Kliptown Snappers (photos about life in a township in South Africa). To coincide with Black History Month, the exhibition Amazon to Caribbean: Early Peoples of the Rainforest opens on October 1 and runs for a year. It explores the links between Amerindian cultures and the development of Caribbean art, culture and identity.

Join in the festival fun

October 19-November 3

Free screenings of international featureshort films for children, in-school film-making projects, workshops, seminars and half-term family activities at cinemas across London are included in the education programme of The TimesBritish Film Institute London Film Festival. Screenings include teachers’ notes and question and answer sessions.

Put science into action

From October 24

Two Royal Air Forcescience workshops are provided at a different school each day in Glasgow, October 24-28; Manchester, October 31-November 4; Derby, November 7-11; Cardiff, November 14-18; Gloucester, November 21-25; London, November 28-December 2. Students take part in a simulated RAF search and rescue mission (on CD-Rom), helping to bring stability to an area after a disaster.

Campaign competition

October to the end of autumn term

The Specialist Schools Trust and print trade association Picon are challenging GCSE graphic products students to plan a print-based campaign on behalf of the Fairtrade Foundation. Prizes in the PrintIT! competition are worth more than pound;100,000 and include digital printing and IT equipment. The winning entry will be used as part of a Fairtrade live campaign.
