Beat maths hysteria

March 4 and 25

Maths Matters, a course in ways of overcoming barriers to learning maths, will be held at Newcastle Emlyn Church Hall, Carmarthenshire, March 4. It is suitable for parents, teachers and those with poor maths. A second course, Accessing the Written Word, at Llety Parc Hotel, Aberystwyth, March 25, will include talks on effective reading. Fee per course: pound;20 (including lunch).

Music theatre

July and August

Thrift Music Theatre Company is running a summer school in Wolverhampton, August 14-19 (cost pound;300), and skills-based workshops in High Wycombe and Kingston-upon-Thames in July and August. Company director Tim Gowin and composer Grant Olding are piloting residential courses in Surrey. More schools and colleges are sought to join in the development of this pilot work.

Visit Africa

Education Action International is looking for teachers to join trips to Uganda or Sudan. There is no charge, but participants are required to raise funds for schools in developing countries. Information days will be held in London and Edinburgh.

Communicator awards

Secondary students are invited to devise a marketing campaign for a charity and produce a sample of direct mail in a new award scheme launched by the UKDirect Marketing Association. Following regional heats, there will be an awards ceremony in June for finalists. Three national winners will see their campaign become a reality. The awards support English, business studies, art and Young Enterprise curriculum areas.
