GRAB 5: SCHOOLS MENU CHALLENGE 2003

Sustain, the alliance for better food and farming, is challenging teenage secondary students to create and submit the magic recipe for getting primary children to eat the recommended daily five portions of fruit and veg. Closing date: July 25. The young chefs must devise a novel two-course primary school lunch menu to a pound;2 budget, which must contain the five portions of fruit and veg including garden peas or petit pois. Finalists will be required to cook the meals in a 45-minute race against the clock.

The two chefs of the winning menu will receive a pound;100 gift voucher each plus a fridge-freezer worth pound;500 or two microwave ovens to the same value for their school. Tel: 01507 602427; www.grab5.com

FLOODLINE:FREE RESOURCES

As part of the National Flood Awareness Campaign, the Environment Agency has produced a range of resources including: a KS2 Flood Awareness Board Game; a Flood Awareness CD-Rom for KS2-3 students explaining the causes of flooding and the Agency’s role in their management; KS3 lesson plans; a KS2-3 flood awareness case study. Also available is a set of KS3 lesson plans exploring the 1953 East coast floods.

GATEWAY TO INDUSTRY BURSARIES

Fourteen teachers of Damp;T, science and careers from the Thames Gateway spent half-term with manufacturing industry. The five-day course, run by Gateway to Industry as part of the “Making Your Future” programme sponsored by the London Development Agency, included visits to the new Fabric Print and Design Bureau at Thames Gateway Technology Centre and to Trelleborg Automotives to find out the skills manufacturers seek from their workforce.
