Projects to cut truancy have been slightly more successful than the Government had claimed, according to new figures.

Statistics released in September suggested that the number of pupils playing truant each day dropped by around 700 last year to 50,543.

The percentage of half-days missed was 0.7 per cent, also lower than estimated but well above the 2004 target of 0.65 per cent.
