East Ayrshire and two other education authorities are extending their work on leadership training by bringing in expertise from business. Negotiations with the other authorities are still in progress.

The initiative will be under the auspices of the Coventry-based Headteachers in Industry organisation, and will be funded initially by the Scottish Executive. East Ayrshire will be offering four secondments, lasting six weeks. Despite the title of the initiative, John McCarney, head of East Ayrshire Council’s schools support service, stressed it would be open to all school leaders, including deputes and principal teachers.

“We see this as another very important route through which we can enhance educational leadership but also focus on succession planning to develop the leaders of the future,” he said.
