Some years ago, on hearing that his school was to be completely renovated, a disillusioned pupil sardonically remarked: “But it will still be a bloody school.”

If class teachers were to be consulted, they might well have a similar response to the Government’s proposals for testing (“Low scores force rethink on new Sats”, TES, May 9): “A bloody test is a bloody test ... ”.
