To the joint initiative on drugs education run by South and North Lanarkshire, the neighbours that vie with each other over many things educational.

Rumour has it that the forthcoming HMI inspection of the South will bring it close to the North’s high ranking. But more of that soon.

Meanwhile, it was left to Terry Butcher, Motherwell Football Club manager and sometime skipper of Rangers and England, to praise the efforts of both authorities and highlight the role of his club in promoting healthy lifestyles among the young.

These days, Butcher noted - obviously searching for the boundaries of political correctness - everyone was drinking water for their health, including footballers during the game.

Anybody who did that when he started playing was regarded as “a bit of a poof”.
