The firefighters’ dispute spawned a rush of instructional e-mails to heads across the country, requesting details of whither they are likely to shepherd their charges in the event of a blaze.

Alas, one rurally based South Lanarkshire head feared for her career after the reply was bounced back and reported to be under investigation because it contained an obscenity.

The cyber-patrolling software had misinterpreted the name of her assembly location. Which is a pity, because the Bow Butts public house really does exist, and it is indeed the most appropriate assembly point. It’s just a pity about the word Butts.
