SOUTHFIELD SCHOOL. Kettering, has won the MicrosoftTES Web page competition and the opportunity to make its own Web site. Teachers and students from Southfields got together with colleagues from the runners-up schools - St Wilfrids, Crawley, and Colmers Farm GM, Birmingham - at the Science Museum, London, this week to meet with Microsoft boss Bill Gates. Each school was given software prizes worth more than Pounds 1,000.

MICROSOFT is introducing substantial new education discounts for schools and home in an attempt to counter software theft. Teachers and students will be able to buy a student licensing box through Microsoft’s usual outlets and receive the software in the post in return for a form verifying their status. APPlE MACINTOSH users who subscribe to AOL, the UK version of the America Online service, can now access the UK-specific area which includes an education service provided by Anglia TV. The new Mac software for the service, America Online 3, finally gives subscribers full compatibility with the UK service. Members can download the new software free of charge from “member services” on AOL’s main menu under “AOL Software Upgrade”.

BBC MULTIMEDIA has launched three CD-Rom titles - The Animals of Farthing Wood, Mastermind and Wallace and Gromit. Aimed at 7 to 11-year-olds, The Animals of Farthing Wood invites children to join the animals on an interactive adventure Aimed at the 12-plus age group, Mastermind features more than 5,000 questions asked by Magnus Magnusson. Wallace and Gromit is designed to entertain with features including a multi-choice quiz for up to four players.
