* The eighth edition of the Glossary of Computing Terms, which was launched at the World Conference on Computers in Education in July, is now available for GCSE students. Published by Longman Higher Education in association with the British Computer Society, it has undergone major rebuilding to provide an explantion for more than 1,800 computing terms, incorporating more than 100 diagrams.The Glossary of Computing Terms costs Pounds 8.99 from major book shops. * The Young Engineers clubs, currently in 700 British schools, will soon be part of the global information superhighway, giving teachers and students the means to communicate with each other by e-mail. They will also be linking up to the Internet through British Telecom’s education service, CampusWorld, via a pilot Young Engineers Internet project, involving 10 schools. The project will run until next March, after which more schools will be invited to get involved. * Topologika Software,which won the gold award at the BETT ‘95 technology show, has released another title in its popular Freddy Teddy series. This one is called Directions and requires Freddy to find his way to various places in his town using a map. Children are given a shopping list of five destinations which Freddy must visit and a certificate to fill in showing what happened at each location. Directions is aimed at key stage 1 to help children develop memory and plan-making skills. * Sherston Software has decided to extend its recent schools site licence offerindefinitely. The company’s managing director, Bill Bonham says: “There is no doubt schools would prefer to purchase site licences for many of our products, allowing them greater flexibility of use within the school.” The site licence conditions also allow teachers to use the software at home to help with their lesson preparation. A pricing formulae of one-and-a-half times the single-user price for primary schools and double the price for secondaries means the site licence for the recently released Mission Control: Crystal Rain Forest 2 (see Technology Extra page XI) would cost Pounds 67.42 (single user Pounds 44.95).Details from Sherston Software, Angel House, Sherston, Malmesbury, Wilts SN16 0LH. * A BSc Honours course in Multimedia Technology is starting at the University of Greenwich in London this month. It is run jointly by the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences, and the School of Humanities. The course will focus on the “interface” between technologies, specifically looking at the areas of computing, television, publishing and telecommunications.
