* The quality of education products on the shortlist at this year’s British Interactive Multimedia Awards failed to overwhelm the judges, so there was no education gold award.

But the silver went to ADAM Interactive Physiology: Cardiovascular System 1.0 (BenjaminCummings Publishing and ADAM Software) and special mentions were given to Romeo and Juliet (HarperCollins, BBC Education and Attica), Asterix Le Defi de Cesar (Philips Media and Pathe Interactive) and Multimedia Hans Christian Andersen (the Multimedia Hans Christian Andersen Consortium). It is understood the judges were concerned about compatibility problems with some of the PCWindows entries.

One of the most popular titles was PAWS Personal Automated Wagging System (Domestic Funk Products Organa) which received the gold award on the children’s section.

More information from the British Interactive Multimedia Association, 6 Wahingley Road, Folksworth, Peterborough PE7 3SY. Tel: 01733 245700.

* Online Media, a division of the Acorn Computer Group, has won a contract to supply “set-top boxes” (add-on devices for televisions that handle video and multimedia from cable sources) for a Californian educational programme.

The Lightspan Partnership uses interactive IT to reinforce maths and reading teaching for children aged 4-12. It intends using Acorn’s set-top boxes, developed in trials in Cambridge, to bridge the gap between homes and school.

* The National Council for Educational Technology, mindful of the need to bring the latest in IT to the notice of teachers, parents and governors, has launched its own magazine with up-to-date details of new technologies like the Internet and the information superhighway.
