YOUR article (TES, April 16) gives the impression that new A-level mathematics criteria will bring about “dumbing down”.

In fact, the use of scientific calculators without formulae, memory, graph-drawing and equation-solving features will add specific demands on candidates and so safeguard the standard of A-levels.
