EDUCATION Secretary David Blunkett has called for new manufacturing and engineering specialist schools which would be sponsored by industry.

They would join the burgeoning specialist schools sector, expected to number nearly 1,000 schools by 206, and already covering technology, languages and sports. Meanwhile, a pound;3m publicity campaign called Don’t Quit Now, aims to persuade the 170,000 16 to 18-year-olds who drop out of education or training to stay in some form of learning.
