The Department for Education and Skills’ figures showing that roughly 10 per cent of all 11-year-olds do not reach the expected standard in literacy can only be made worse by the proposed job cuts in the DfES and the Office for Standards in Education.

The mantra of this Government used to be “education, education, education”.

It now appears to be “cut, cut cut”, with no recognition of the critical workload of these organisations.
