Annual parents’ meetings should be scrapped to cut bureaucracy in schools, says the National Association of Head Teachers.
The meetings, which are required by law, were condemned as “the most wasteful use of time and resources devised” by David Hart, general secretary of the association .
He said that the meetings created extra work for teachers and heads even though most parents failed to attend them. He added that many parents sat on schools’ governing bodies, giving them plenty of opportunities to put questions to headteachers.
But a spokeswoman for the Department for Education and Employment said that the annual meeting provided parents with the only opportunity to question school governors.
