The Local Government Association is pushing the Government for a wide-ranging, but short, inquiry into teachers’ pay and conditions which would be implemented by September 1999.
Graham Lane, chairman of the LGA’s education committee, said he had indications from ministers that this would “not be unwelcome”.
The Local Government Management Board and the LGA have summoned local education chairmen to a meeting on July 6 to discuss terms of the review which would also look at in-service training, recruitment and retention, classrooom assistants, secretarial, financial, and counselling services.
