Call for tighter aptitude rules

RULES allowing specialist schools to select pupils by aptitude should be tightened, according to Philip Hunter, the schools adjudicator. He today ordered Hertfordshire education authority to monitor aptitude tests carried out by 10 of its schools to ensure that they do not also select by ability.

He expressed concern that even tests specifically designed to measure pupils’ aptitude may favour children with greater all-round ability.
