Excessive workload was the biggest issue for college lecturers contacting the counselling service, which began operations last year.

The College and University Support Network charity said 28 per cent of calls in FE were from lecturers struggling with large amounts of work, while a further 26 per cent were concerned about their finances.

Patrick Nash, chief executive of the charity, said: “Our experience is that highlighting the problems, making people aware of them outside the sector, is the first step to alleviating them.”
