Q: I’m doing a PGCE in design and technology, specialising in electronics and control. I started out believing that there would be a great demand for this subject in schools. But now it looks as if it might be difficult to get a newly qualified teaching job. I have an engineering degree - could I apply for maths and physics posts despite my PGCE subject being in design and technology?

A: Yes, you can apply for any jobs you want - your qualified teacher status enables you to teach any subject and any age group. Demand for design and technology, mathematics and science teachers is high, so you’ll probably be a very attractive option. Be aware of the importance of subject and curriculum knowledge, though. You’ll be making a hard job even tougher and more stressful if you teach outside your specialism.
