Playground Annie Leibovitzes and classroom Cartier-Bressons will be able to win thousands of pounds of digital camera equipment for their schools, in a new competition being run by The TES.
The TES digital-photography competition encourages pupils to take pictures that illustrate the theme “growth”. Entrants must focus on one of three categories: science and technology, transport and travel, and culture and the environment. The aim is to encourage children and teenagers to capture on film their individual way of seeing the world.
More than pound;10,000 worth of prizes will be shared among the winners in each category. An overall winning school will receive a Canon digital SLR camera and photo printer. Ashley Ollett, of Canon, said: “Photography can be applied to all areas of the national curriculum. Viewing their surroundings from the other side of the lens can help children see their world from a different point of view.”
Schools will receive free subscriptions to The TES and the Royal Photographic Society. Elizabeth Williams, of the Royal Photographic Society, said: “By looking at images through a camera, children can step back and learn the power of images.”
Wendy Berliner, deputy editor of The TES, said: “Visual literacy is important in our modern society which relies on it heavily for instant communication. We are delighted to support a competition that encourages children and young people to think in such a creative way.”
