You’ve got the placards prepared and the chants well-oiled. You’ve checked with the police and the council that the route’s OK. You’ve spent months geeing up the troops for what could be a pivotal day in the ongoing battle for a better pay deal for teachers.

In short, you’ve ticked all the boxes - until one of Hollywood’s biggest stars threatens to throw an almighty spanner in the works.

The Rock has taken out all-comers in the wrestling ring and, in movieland, foiled terrorists, evil sorcerors and human-eating hippos.

Now, however, the latest blockbuster featuring the former professional wrestler, also known as Dwayne Johnson, finds itself competing with Scotland’s biggest teaching union - to see who will dominate the streets of Glasgow this weekend.

A huge turnout is expected for the EIS union’s pay demonstration, starting at Kelvingrove Park in the city’s West End on Saturday morning. However, thousands of protesters will then march to a rally in the city centre - where this week filming is taking place for Hobbs and Shaw, a spin-off film from the Fast and Furious series best-known for its chaotic car chases.

The union has now attempted to offset any concerns that the filming - which involves a number of city-centre streets being closed off for several days - will get in the way of the march and rally. Demonstrators could be gathering in George Square at the same time as hordes of film fans try to get a glimpse of the movie action taking place a stone’s throw away, with other Hobbs and Shaw stars including Jason Statham, Vanessa Kirby and Idris Elba.

In a press release about the upcoming rally, the union stated: “The EIS is aware that a major film production is booked in for use of some Glasgow streets on the same date as the march and rally. However, the EIS has confirmed approval for its March route and confirmed approval for use of George Square, so the EIS demo will be unaffected by the filming.”

Perhaps the EIS has been reassured by reports that, contrary to initial expectations, The Rock will not actually be part of the scenes filmed in Glasgow.

Regardless, demonstrators may want to dispense with the usual protest chants and songs, and borrow from the myriad catchphrases of one of the movies’ biggest stars.

For what better way to show you mean business when it comes to pay negotiations, than to flex your muscles and pronounce: “The EIS will layeth the smack down on your candy ass!”
