Children who spent a night on a barge were inspired to stage a play about the history of their local waterways, writes Neil Sears.

Boothferry primary pupils from Goole, East Yorkshire, visited the nearbyWaterways Museum and travelled on the canal.

“We had them observing everything they saw on the journey and making sculptures,” said museum education officer Sue Kiel.

Once back at school they played the parts of navvies and bargees in a play called By the Canal.
