A SCHOOL nurse and a full-time helper should be available for a pupil population of 6,000 to 7,000, says the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association.

Some nurses are looking after up to 18,000 children. A report by the associationsays nurses’ duties should include promoting healthy lifestyles, including tackling teenage pregnancies, preventing mental health problems; and helping children with chronic health needs, who are increasingly educated in mainstream schools.
